Through the Tactical Training Unit at the New York Police Department’s training bureau and academy, individuals can take rigorous courses to prepare themselves for street encounters. They learn risk assessment and strategic resolution skills, so they can prevent or contain dangerous situations. There are classes offered in techniques for operating decoys, handcuffing, and using an expandable baton, and students gain knowledge in takedown defense and rope-line techniques. In addition, proper actions for handling weapons are discussed, which includes developing awareness and disarming suspects. Certain programs have been developed for school safety officers, fire marshals, and dignitary protection teams. The Intelligence Division works with the Tactical Training Unit to administer the latter program.
